Course Objectives This is an elective course designed to expose students to the intricacies of international criminal law, including the scope and boundaries of the field, subjects of international criminal law (ratione personae), international crimes (ratione materiae), principles of criminal responsibility, history of international criminal investigations and prosecutions (the “direct enforcement system”), modalities of international cooperation in penal matters (the “indirect enforcement system”), the International Criminal Court (a hybrid “direct enforcement system”), mixed model of international criminal justice, procedural and evidentiary norms applicable to international criminal proceedings, international criminal justice in the age of globalization, and historical review and quantitative analysis of international criminal justice, among other salient issues.
