Course Objectives

The course is intended to provide basic information about different materials and their application in the everyday engineering activities. The influence of composition and structure of materials, as well as discrepancies from the ideal state, are analyzed. Mechanical and thermal properties of materials are presented, as well as the influence of the corrosion and wear, and possibilities to influence those material properties by different treatments, that is by alloying, strain hardening and annealing. Principles of the phase changes in materials, as well as its influence on the structure of materials is outlined. Specific groups of materials, such as metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites and construction materials are elaborated with the basic examples of their applications.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

Describe the basic properties of different types of materials, and their composition and structure

Differentiate between materials and their mechanical, thermal electrical and other properties and how to influence them

Explain basic principles of materials' phase changes, solidification, heat treatment for changing the materials properties

State the basic properties of various groups/classes of materials
