THE EFFECT OF TELEVISION CULTURE ON THE VISIBILITY OF LITERARY WORK: THE ADVENTURE OF YAPRAK DÖKÜMÜ (WHEN THE LEAVES FALL) IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Abstract

Television series, have a significant impact on cultural interaction. Among these effects, there is also making the literary work invisible. For example, television series adapted from literary works, can arouse interest in Turkish literature outside Türkiye, thus making positive contributions to translation activities from Turkish to other languages. In this study, the translation process of Reşat Nuri Güntekin's famous novel Yaprak Dökümü (When The Leaves Fall) in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be examined in order to reveal the contribution of Turkish television series to the international appearance of literary works. The work in question was adapted into a television series and reached a wide audience in Türkiye between 2006 and 2010. It is known that the series got acclaimed abroad. The series started to be broadcast on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Hayat TV channel in 2011. The translation of the book was soon published by one of the publishing houses. Based on this example, it can be said that televison as a popular cultures tool, makes visible the literary work, which is a product of high culture.
The study will focus on the relationship between popular culture and high level culture and under which conditions popular culture can carry high level culture. Also, the research will be on which level this conveyance of having a historical past and commonalities in culture will affect the ties between Türkiye and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thus, by trying to determine the extent to which television culture contributes to the visibility of literary works, the fellowship between media and publishing will be shown in the context of Yaprak Dökümü (When The Leaves Fall).
